Early Childhood Affordability, Teacher Compensation in the Media Spotlight   

The New York Times and Bloomberg have both taken on the issue of affordable child care this weekend and last week, PBS Newshour addressed teacher compensation and how many educators, including those who have degrees, cannot make ends meet without government assistance or a second job. 

Children's Oral Health in the News

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), more than 40 percent of children have tooth decay by the time they reach kindergarten. Children with poor dental health were nearly three times more likely than their healthy peers to miss school due to dental pain. These absences were also linked to weaker academic performance. This guide to dental health can help parents understand when a child's dental care should begin, what parents can do to promote good dental health in their children, and offers a dental timeline into adolescence. 211 Child Care Releases Top Reasons Programs Close in CT in FY2016

In FY16, 211 Child Care gathered responses from child care centers and licensed child care homes on why they closed, did not renew their license or stopped providing care while their license is still active.  Overall, 434 licensed child care homes closed and 192 opened during FY16, resulting in a net loss of -242. 141 Centers (licensed and exempt) closed and 111 opened during FY16, resulting in a net loss of -30. The Diaper Bank Hosts "Rock Your Baby"

Rock Your Baby 2015The Diaper Bank will host its annual "Rock Your Baby" event on Thursday, September 15, at Amarante's Sea Cliff in New Haven, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets are $75 per person and can be purchased HERE (click on the "purchase tickets" tab at the top). All proceeds from “Rock Your Baby” will benefit The Diaper Bank, a Connecticut-based non-profit organization that centralizes the fundraising and distribution of free diapers to poor families through existing service providers, including local food pantries, soup kitchens, daycare centers, social service agencies and shelters.

Now celebrating its 12th year, The Diaper Bank has to date distributed more than 20 million free diapers to poor and low-income families through its extensive Diaper Distribution Network (DDN) of 57 agencies in New Haven, Fairfield, Hartford and Middlesex Counties.  To learn more about The Diaper Bank, visit: www.thediaperbank.org.

Connecticut Parent Power Hosts Annual Gala

Connecticut Parent Power will host its 4th annual "Red Carpet Hero Award Gala" on Friday, September 16, at the Four Points Sheraton in Meriden, from 6 p.m. to midnight. Tickets are $100 per person.

Connecticut Parent Power (CTPP), established in 2001, focuses on local, state and global affairs with issues that include, but are not limited to, early childhood, (cradle to career) education Pre-K thru 12th grade school systems, immigration/racial/equity/economic security and health care reform.
