Groton Patch: Children First Groton and City of Groton to Host Family Safety Day Picnic

Grab a picnic lunch and join Children First Groton and the City of Groton at Eastern Point Beach (rain location - City of Groton Municipal Building) for the “Family Safety Day Picnic,” on Saturday, June 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will include fire safety demonstrations, fire trucks, Groton City Police information, children’s activities, storytelling and a moon bounce. All activities are free.

“This is the neighborhood’s second town-wide collaborative grassroots event, the first being a health event, “I Spy Healthy Groton,” and now, the family safety picnic,” said Kimberly Dole, chairperson of Children First Groton. “This event allows fire companies, police, local health, town and city departments, libraries, residents and businesses to collaborate towards a common goal of safety for all children and families in Groton. We hope that this year’s event, along with our upcoming community plan, will put a focus on safety for all families, helping Groton become one of the safest towns in Connecticut,” said Dole.

Children First Groton is a group of individuals and organizations concerned with the well-being of Groton's young children. The group is organized into three work groups and five neighborhood groups; all of whom are currently working on a town-wide plan for early education. The mission of Children First Groton is, “all Groton children, birth to age eight, are healthy, safe, successful learners connected to strong families and a community that values diversity.”

Early childhood is a critical time in preparing a child for lifelong success. That is also a goal of the CT Early Childhood Alliance.

As part of the safety day event, Children First Groton will host the CT Early Childhood Alliance's early childhood display, which was recently showcased at the State Capitol/Legislative Office Building concourse. Using large, colorful panels, the display illustrates the many important aspects of preparing a child for future success, including high-quality early care, early education, health, nutrition and strong families.

“The display really highlights – in a concrete manner – the importance of the success of our children and families in Connecticut,” said Susan Corrice, neighborhood liaison to Children First Groton.
