As it does every year during the “Week of the Young Child,” Torrington Child Care Center on Kennedy Drive celebrated its children with a public art show showcasing the work of the children throughout the year.
“This is our 11th year,” said Mary Cecchinato, the center’s director.
This year’s event took place April 15 and 16 and was open to the public. Tours of the artwork were even lead by the children.
“It’s a great way for our families, neighbors, town and state officials to see what we have been doing here at TCCC,” said Cecchinato.
On April 15, Mayor Ryan Bingham made his way to the center for a tour and lunch with the children – a lunch he chose. The children were pleased with his choice of chicken nuggets (with orange slices). On Friday, April 16, Rep. Michelle Cook and Rep. Roberta Willis made stops at the center for a tour as well.
The center’s before- and after-school children built the City of Torrington out of blocks – placing TCCC just in front of City Hall and included a football stadium, farm, zoo, hospital and oceanfront property to the town.
The “Week of the Young Child,” sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), helps focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.
“Early education – high-quality early education – is vital to the future of our children,” said Cecchinato. “It’s important to make sure they have the foundation they need to succeed in life,” she said.
