2009 Legislative Session Begins

Date:
January, 2009

The Connecticut General Assembly began their 2009 session yesterday by swearing in the members of the House and Senate and with a State of the State address from Governor Rell.  It was a day of excitement and optimism despite the real challenges that confront us.

The new legislature is faced with a multi-billion dollar budget deficit and some very tough decisions to make about where to make budget cuts.  On a positive note for early childhood advocates, Governor Rell indicated in her address that child care is one of the most important social safety components.  She should be applauded for her recognition of the importance of early childhood.  See her speech here.

Governor Rell's budget will be released next month, but agencies are providing their input now.

Because many interest groups will be fighting for their own programs, it is more important than ever for the early childhood community to make our presence known and stand up for children.  Take time over the next month to meet with, call, email or write to your state legislator.  Tell them about the importance of early childhood programs in your community and ask them to do their best to keep children from being victims of budget cuts.

The Alliance will provide many opportunities over the coming months to engage legislators, but in order to be successful, we will need every one of you to make an effort on your own too.
